Country of Strangers: A Poetic Journey of Displacement and Belonging
About the Book
Country of Strangers: New and Selected Poems is a powerful and moving collection that explores the themes of displacement, belonging, and the search for home. Lê Thi Diem Thúy's poems are deeply personal and evocative, drawing on her own experiences as a Vietnamese refugee who came to the United States as a child. Her poems speak to the universal human experience of displacement and the longing for belonging, and they offer a unique and insightful perspective on the immigrant experience.
The poems in Country of Strangers are divided into three sections: "Leaving," "Arriving," and "Becoming." The first section explores the pain and loss of leaving one's homeland, while the second section celebrates the hope and possibility of starting a new life in a new country. The third section examines the complex and ongoing process of becoming a part of a new culture while still maintaining one's own identity.
