The novel opens in the present day, as Helen Nurkse returns to Burnt Island for the first time in over twenty years. She has come to visit her dying mother, who has been living on the island since Helen was a child. Alternating with Helen's story is the story of Marie Humphreys, a young woman who lived on Burnt Island in the early 1900s. Marie was a strong and independent woman who defied the expectations of her time. She was also a gifted artist, and her paintings provide a glimpse into the life of the island community.
