The novel opens in the present day, as Helen Nurkse returns to Burnt Island for the first time in over twenty years. She has come to visit her dying mother, who has been living on the island since Helen was a child. Helen is haunted by memories of her childhood on the island, and of the tragic event that drove her family away. As she spends time with her mother, Helen begins to confront her past and the secrets that have been kept from her.
Alternating with Helen's story is the story of Marie Humphreys, a young woman who lived on Burnt Island in the early 1900s. Marie was a strong and independent woman who defied the expectations of her time. She was also a gifted artist, and her paintings provide a glimpse into the life of the island community.
Helen and Marie's stories are intertwined, and as the novel progresses, the reader learns more about the tragic event that connects them. The novel builds to a climax that is both heartbreaking and hopeful, as Helen and Marie come to terms with their past and find a path to redemption.
