My Rag And Tube Journey From Oregon To Oshkosh: An Unforgettable Adventure
In the summer of 2016, I embarked on a solo bicycle journey from my home in Eugene, Oregon, to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, a distance of over 2,200 miles. I called it my "rag and tube" journey because I traveled with only the bare essentials: a tent, a sleeping bag, a few changes of clothes, and a bicycle repair kit. I had no support vehicle, no GPS, and no pre-planned route. I simply set out with a map and a compass, and the determination to see how far I could go.
The journey was physically and mentally challenging, but it was also one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I cycled through some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, from the lush forests of the Pacific Northwest to the rolling hills of the Midwest. I met countless kind and generous people along the way, who offered me food, shelter, and encouragement. And I learned a lot about myself, my limits, and my ability to persevere.

I wrote this book to share my story with others, and to inspire them to step outside of their comfort zones and pursue their own dreams. I hope that my journey will show you that anything is possible if you have the courage to believe in yourself and to never give up.
The Route
I began my journey in Eugene, Oregon, and cycled north through the Willamette Valley. I then crossed the Cascade Mountains into central Oregon, where I rode through the high desert and the Ochoco Mountains. From there, I continued east into Idaho, where I cycled through the Snake River Valley and the Sawtooth Mountains. I then crossed into Montana, where I rode through the Bitterroot Mountains and the Rocky Mountains. Finally, I entered Wisconsin and cycled through the rolling hills of the Midwest to Oshkosh.
The total distance of my journey was 2,234 miles. I cycled for an average of 60 miles per day, and I spent 38 days on the road. I camped out for most of the journey, and I stayed in motels or bed and breakfasts on the occasional night.
The Challenges
There were many challenges along the way. I had to deal with rain, wind, heat, and cold. I had to climb mountains, cross deserts, and navigate through busy cities. I also had to deal with mechanical problems with my bicycle, and I had a few minor injuries.
The most challenging part of the journey was the mental challenge. There were times when I was exhausted, discouraged, and lonely. I doubted myself and my ability to finish the journey. But I kept going, one pedal stroke at a time. I reminded myself of my goal, and I focused on the positive aspects of the journey. I also drew strength from the people I met along the way, who encouraged me to keep going.
The Rewards
The rewards of the journey were far greater than the challenges. I saw some of the most beautiful scenery in the country. I met countless kind and generous people. I learned a lot about myself, my limits, and my ability to persevere. And I accomplished something that I never thought I could do.
The journey was a life-changing experience for me. It taught me that anything is possible if you have the courage to believe in yourself and to never give up. I hope that my story will inspire you to step outside of your comfort zone and pursue your own dreams.
