Smith's poems are both personal and universal, as she writes about her own experiences as a woman, a mother, and a daughter, while also exploring the larger questions of life, death, and meaning.
The poems in Life On Mars are divided into four sections: "The Red Planet," "The Blue Planet," "The Black Hole," and "The White Dwarf." Each section explores a different aspect of the human experience, from the wonder of discovery to the pain of loss.
In "The Red Planet," Smith writes about the excitement and danger of space exploration. She imagines herself as an astronaut, landing on Mars for the first time. She is awed by the beauty of the planet's red desert landscape, but she is also aware of the dangers that lurk in the unknown.
In "The Blue Planet," Smith turns her attention to Earth. She writes about the beauty of the planet's oceans, forests, and mountains. She also writes about the damage that humans have inflicted on the planet, and she calls for us to take better care of our home.
In "The Black Hole," Smith explores the darker side of the human experience. She writes about death, loss, and despair. She also writes about the power of love and hope, and she shows us that even in the darkest of times, there is always light to be found.
In "The White Dwarf," Smith writes about the future of humanity. She imagines a time when the sun has burned out and the Earth has become a cold, dark planet. She also imagines a time when humans have evolved into a new species, capable of living in the harsh conditions of space.
Life On Mars is a powerful and moving collection of poems that will stay with you long after you finish reading it. Smith's poems are beautifully written and thought-provoking, and they offer a unique perspective on the human experience.
