The Early Years
Bob Marley was born on February 6, 1945, in Nine Mile, Jamaica. His father was a white Jamaican plantation owner, and his mother was a black Jamaican peasant. Marley's parents were not married, and he was raised by his mother in poverty.
As a child, Marley was drawn to music. He sang in the church choir and played the guitar. He also listened to American rhythm and blues music, which had a major influence on his own musical style.
The Wailers
In 1963, Marley formed a ska band called The Wailers with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The Wailers released their first album, The Wailing Wailers, in 1965. The album was a commercial failure, but it did help to establish the band's reputation as one of the most talented ska bands in Jamaica.
In 1966, The Wailers switched to a reggae sound. Their first reggae album, Catch a Fire, was released in 1973. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to introduce reggae music to a global audience.
International Stardom
The Wailers' international success continued with the release of their albums Burnin' (1973),Natty Dread (1974),and Rastaman Vibration (1976). These albums featured some of Marley's most famous songs, including "No Woman, No Cry," "I Shot the Sheriff," and "Redemption Song."
In 1976, Marley survived an assassination attempt. The attack only served to strengthen his resolve, and he continued to tour and record music until his death from cancer in 1981.

Bob Marley was a musical icon who changed the world with his music and message of peace and love. He was a pioneer of reggae music, and his songs continue to inspire millions of people around the globe.
