Early Life and Career

Alexandra Elene Maclean Denny was born on January 6, 1947, in Wimbledon, London. Her father, Neil Denny, was a civil servant, and her mother, Edna Denny, was a teacher. Sandy had two older sisters, Rosemary and Margaret.

Sandy began playing guitar and singing at a young age. She was inspired by the folk music of the 1960s, particularly the music of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. In 1965, she joined the folk group The Strawbs. The group released two albums, but Denny left in 1967 to pursue a solo career.

Solo Career and Success

Denny's solo debut album, The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, was released in 1967. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it established Denny as one of the leading folk singers of her generation.

Denny followed up The North Star Grassman and the Ravens with a series of successful albums, including Sandy (1968),The Ballad of a Crystal Man (1969),and All Our Own Work (1970). These albums showcased Denny's unique voice, her songwriting skills, and her ability to interpret traditional folk songs.

In addition to her solo career, Denny also collaborated with other musicians, including Richard Thompson, John Martyn, and The Incredible String Band. She also performed on the BBC television series Top of the Pops and The Old Grey Whistle Test.

Personal Life and Struggles

Denny's personal life was often troubled. She struggled with depression and addiction, and she had a number of failed relationships. In 1973, she married Trevor Lucas, but the marriage ended in divorce in 1978.

Denny's struggles took a toll on her health. She developed anorexia nervosa, and she began to drink heavily. In 1977, she was admitted to a psychiatric hospital.

Death and Legacy

On April 21, 1978, Denny fell down a flight of stairs at her home in London. She died the following day at the age of 31.
