The novel tells the story of a Vietnamese immigrant family living in Oakland, California. The family is struggling to make ends meet and to find their place in a new country. The father, a fisherman, is often away at sea, and the mother works long hours at a garment factory. The children, Helen and Lenny, are left to fend for themselves. They spend their days wandering the streets of Oakland, trying to avoid the gangs and the violence that surrounds them.
As the children grow older, they begin to question their identity and their place in the world. Helen is a talented artist, but she feels like she doesn't belong in the predominantly white art world. Lenny is a bright young man, but he is haunted by the memories of the war in Vietnam. Both children are searching for a sense of home and belonging, but they are unsure where to find it.
Not Here is a beautifully written and deeply moving novel that explores the themes of immigration, identity, and belonging. Nguyen's prose is lyrical and evocative, and he creates a vivid and immersive world for his characters. The novel is a must-read for anyone who is interested in the human condition and the power of literature.
