The Rise of the Plantagenets
The Plantagenets originated in Anjou, France. The first Plantagenet king of England was Henry II, who ascended to the throne in 1154. Henry was a powerful and ambitious ruler, and he quickly expanded the English empire. He conquered Ireland and Wales, and he also gained control of large parts of France. Henry's son, Richard the Lionheart, was one of the most famous knights in history. He led the Third Crusade and fought valiantly against the Saracens.
The Golden Age of the Plantagenets
The 13th century was a golden age for the Plantagenets. King John, Henry II's son, signed the Magna Carta in 1215. This document limited the power of the king and established the rights of the people. Edward I, John's son, was a great warrior and lawgiver. He conquered Wales and Scotland, and he also established a system of common law that is still used in many countries today.
The Decline of the Plantagenets
The Plantagenets began to decline in the 14th century. Edward II, Edward I's son, was a weak and ineffectual king. He was deposed by his wife, Isabella of France, and her lover, Roger Mortimer. Edward III, Edward II's son, was a more successful king. He won the Hundred Years' War against France, and he also established the Free Download of the Garter.
The End of the Plantagenets
The Plantagenets came to an end in 1485 with the death of Richard III. Richard was the last of the male Plantagenet line. He was killed at the Battle of Bosworth Field by Henry Tudor, who became Henry VII and founded the Tudor dynasty.
The Legacy of the Plantagenets
The Plantagenets left a lasting legacy on English history. They established the English empire, they created a system of common law, and they founded some of the most famous institutions in England, such as the University of Oxford and the Tower of London. The Plantagenets were a powerful and influential dynasty, and their story is a fascinating one.
